Happy National Coming Out Day, everyone! No matter what side of the closet you’re on, this day is for you
– it is a day of acknowledgement for the daily comings out that we LGBT people have to go through and the emotional and mental toll that takes on us.
“NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY… OCTOBER 11-1988 – National Gay Rights Advocates,” Keith Haring, 1988 (x).
In the days following The Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on October 11, 1988, activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary conceived of the idea of a National Coming Out Day. The National Gay Rights Advocates Organization, which has since become a part of the Human Rights Campaign, released a statement reading: “Let’s Stand Up and Be Counted! … Millions of gay men and lesbians live all across these United States, but our invisibility is robbing us of our rights. Let’s demonstrate our strength by showing our numbers.”
